Built a free Mac teleprompter that hides during screen sharing

Show original source text →
https://reddit.com/link/1t9ezu9/video/ynq9vcg9tc0h1/player Hey everyone, I made Aira, a completely free Mac teleprompter that sits just below your camera and can scroll as you speak. It stays hidden from screen sharing and recordings, doesn't need an account, and speech recognition happens locally on your Mac. I originally built it for HireVues and presentations because I didn't always have time to memorize everything. Most of the options I tried were paid, had awkward setup, or just didn't work the way I wanted. So I did what any software developer would do lol - spent a month building my own, even though versions of this already existed. I've always relied a lot on free software as a student, so I know how frustrating it is to keep paying for apps. Making this free is my small way of giving back. There are a bunch of other features too, but that's the core idea. Its in beta right now and I would love any feedback! This is my first MacOS app!! Try it out here - [Mac App Store](https://apple.co/3PABJmZ) or from the [website](https://useaira.co/)

Synthesis verdict
**Pivot**: Aira, a free Mac teleprompter, solves a specific pain point for professionals and students who need a seamless, privacy-focused teleprompter for video interviews and presentations. However, its free model and lack of monetization path guarantee zero revenue, despite strong product-market fit. The product's unique value proposition, including local speech recognition and hidden display, addresses a genuine need, but its competitive moat is relatively thin. To succeed as a business venture, Aira needs to introduce a monetization strategy, such as freemium, donations, or paid upgrades, to ensure sustainability.

Strengths

  • - Aira solves a specific, unmet need in video recording workflows
  • - The product has a unique value proposition, including local speech recognition and hidden display
  • - The Mac App Store and website distribution channels are solid
  • - The founder's credibility as a developer and the viral potential of a free, privacy-first tool could drive organic growth

Weaknesses

  • - The free model guarantees zero revenue, despite strong product-market fit
  • - The competitive moat is relatively thin, and a larger player could integrate a similar free, offline mode
  • - The product relies on Apple's ecosystem, making it vulnerable to platform changes
  • - There is no stated monetization plan, putting sustainability at risk within 6-12 months

Best angle

Aira should introduce a freemium model, offering basic features for free and advanced features, such as cloud sync or AI script suggestions, for a subscription fee, to ensure sustainability and scalability.

Viability

8.0

“The use of existing libraries like Apple's Speech framework simplifies the development process, making it more feasible for a small team to build a functional Mac teleprompter within a short timeframe.”

Building a Mac teleprompter like Aira is feasible for a solo or 2-person team within 4-12 weeks. The core functionality involves creating a GUI application that can scroll text, utilize speech recognition, and remain hidden from screen sharing and recordings. The speech recognition can be achieved using existing libraries like Apple's Speech framework, which is relatively straightforward. The main challenges lie in ensuring seamless integration with various MacOS versions, handling different camera and screen sharing setups, and achieving a polished user interface. The fact that the original creator built a functional beta version in a month suggests that the technical complexity is manageable. However, refining the app, testing it thoroughly, and ensuring compatibility with different MacOS configurations may require additional time and resources. A 2-person team could potentially expedite this process by dividing tasks such as development, testing, and UI/UX design.

Competition

6.0

“Aira wins by offering a free, account - free, locally - run teleprompter that stays hidden from recordings - a privacy - first niche not widely served.”

The market already offers several teleprompter solutions for macOS, primarily paid apps such as PromptSmart, Teleprompter Pro, and iCue that require user accounts, cloud synchronization, and often eye - tracking or AI - driven scrolling. None of these provide a completely free, no - login experience, nor do they run speech recognition locally on the device, which means they cannot guarantee that teleprompter data never leaves the Mac. Aira's differentiation rests on three concrete advantages: (1) zero cost and no account creation, (2) local processing of speech to keep the workflow private, and (3) a discreet placement that stays out of screen - share and recordings. These features address a clear pain point for users who dislike recurring fees and value privacy, especially creators who record videos for platforms that prohibit visible teleprompter overlays. However, the durability of this advantage hinges on sustaining a free model without compromising support or future monetization, and on preventing competitors from copying the privacy - first, locally - run architecture. While the concept is novel and solves an underserved niche, the competitive moat is relatively thin; a larger player could integrate a similar free, offline mode or bundle it with existing suites. Consequently, the idea shows real but not strongly defensible differentiation, meriting a moderate score.

Monetization

“A free-only model with no monetization path guarantees zero revenue, despite strong product-market fit.”

The product solves a clear pain point (teleprompter for presentations/interviews) with a unique value prop: free, local speech recognition, hidden from screen sharing, and no account required. However, the revenue model is non-existent - being 'free' with no monetization path (ads, freemium, donations, or paid upgrades) means zero revenue capture. The Mac App Store and website distribution channels are solid, but without pricing or conversion mechanics, unit economics are unsustainable. Cost-to-serve (development, hosting, support) is unaddressed, and the 'giving back' ethos, while noble, doesn't align with a business venture's purpose. Competitors like Prompter People or Teleprompter Premium charge $10 - $30 one-time or subscription, proving willingness to pay. The beta phase is a missed opportunity to test pricing tiers (e.g., free for basic scrolling, paid for advanced features like speed control or cloud sync).

Risk

2.0

“Aira's free model and dependence on Apple's ecosystem make it vulnerable to platform changes and unsustainable costs.”

Aira faces significant threats despite its innovative, free, and locally processed features. **Regulation** isn't a primary killer here due to its local processing and free model, avoiding GDPR/CCPA complexities. However, **Platform Risk** is high because Aira relies on the Mac App Store and macOS compatibility. A single Apple policy change or macOS update could break core functionality (e.g., screen sharing hiding, camera access) without warning, given Apple's history of strict app review and frequent OS updates. **Churn** might not be immediate but could rise if users, accustomed to free, resist any future paid features, limiting monetization paths. The most immediate killer, though, is **No-Budget Customers**. Being completely free with no stated monetization plan (e.g., no account requirements for future SaaS models, no in-app purchases, no donations mentioned) means sustainability is at risk within 6-12 months due to development and maintenance costs without a revenue stream.

“Aira solves a specific, unmet need in video recording workflows - hiding teleprompter text from screen shares - for a niche but highly motivated Mac user base that resists paid, clunky alternatives.”

The idea targets a real, underserved niche: professionals and students who need a seamless, privacy-focused teleprompter for video interviews (like HireVue), presentations, or content creation on Mac. Existing solutions are often paid, require accounts, or fail to hide the prompt from screen shares - a critical flaw for job candidates and corporate users. Aira's local speech recognition and hidden display solve genuine pain points without vendor lock-in. The fact that it's free removes adoption friction, especially for students and indie creators who are budget-conscious but still need professional tools. The Mac App Store distribution and clean website suggest decent product polish. However, the market size is constrained: while millions use Macs, only a subset actively record video interviews or presentations regularly - likely 1-2 million globally (job seekers, educators, remote workers, YouTubers). Monetization is currently absent, which limits scalability; even if 1% of that audience converts to donations or premium features (e.g., cloud sync, multi-device, AI script suggestions), revenue potential exists. But without a clear path to monetization, this remains a passion project unless expanded. The founder's credibility as a developer and the viral potential of a free, privacy-first tool could drive organic growth, but marketing beyond Reddit and the App Store is unproven. Competitors like Teleprompter Pro or PrompterPro exist but are paid and less focused on screen-sharing privacy - Aira's differentiation is real but narrow.
