Got a contract to do security testing of AWS - built nqd a CLI based AI agent

Show original source text →
I'm lazy, so I try to avoid doing repetitive things and end up wasting more time automating rather than the actual time it would have taken to do the work. Security testing of cloud apps is exactly that. There are a large number of activities, actions that are conditioned on previous outcomes and correlating and compiling results. So naturally I spent a week building an AI Agent which did all of this for me. The result, 8000 vulnerabilities across \~100 VMs and associated infra, each mapped to a CVE, each with a CVSS score compiled into a searchable HTML report. I'm thinking this has VC investment grade potential?

**Pivot**. The idea of automating security testing of cloud apps using an AI agent has potential, but significant development and refinement are needed to create a robust and scalable solution. The market for cloud security is growing rapidly, and solutions that enhance efficiency and accuracy are in high demand. However, the success of this venture will depend on the scalability of the AI agent, the ability to integrate with various cloud platforms, and the pricing model. The key challenges lie in scaling the AI agent, ensuring its accuracy, and integrating it with various cloud apps and security tools.

Strengths

  • - The AI agent automates repetitive tasks, significantly improving efficiency and accuracy.
  • - The ability to map vulnerabilities to CVEs and CVSS scores, and compile them into a searchable report, adds substantial value.
  • - The market for cloud security is growing rapidly, and solutions that enhance efficiency and accuracy are in high demand.

Weaknesses

  • - The idea lacks clear differentiation in a crowded, technically demanding market with high maintenance costs.
  • - The continuous update of vulnerabilities (CVEs) and scoring (CVSS) requires significant ongoing investment, potentially eating into margins.
  • - The sales cycle for security solutions, especially those requiring integration with diverse cloud infrastructures, can be long and costly.

Best angle

The AI agent should be productized into a self-service platform with API integrations and usage-based pricing to become a compelling vertical SaaS play with strong gross margins and enterprise sales potential.

“The core idea is promising, but significant development and refinement are needed to create a robust and scalable solution.”

The idea of automating security testing of cloud apps using an AI agent has potential, as it addresses a repetitive and complex task. The fact that the founder was able to build a functional prototype in a week is impressive, but it's unclear if this was a robust and scalable solution. To reach VC investment grade potential, the product would need to be significantly developed and refined to handle various cloud app configurations, integrate with existing security tools, and ensure accuracy and reliability. A solo or 2-person team may struggle to achieve this level of development within 4-12 weeks, as it would require substantial expertise in AI, security testing, and cloud infrastructure. The key challenges lie in scaling the AI agent, ensuring its accuracy, and integrating it with various cloud apps and security tools.

“Lack of clear differentiation in a crowded, technically demanding market with high maintenance costs undermines venture-grade potential.”

The idea's viability is hindered by significant competition in the security testing market, the high cost of maintaining and updating AI models for evolving vulnerabilities, and the lack of a clear go-to-market strategy for an AI-driven security testing solution. While the proof-of-concept demonstrates technical capability, scaling this into a venture-grade business faces substantial barriers. The market for cloud app security is crowded with established players (e.g., Synopsys, Veracode, WhiteSource) offering comprehensive solutions, including AI-powered tools. Differentiation solely based on automation efficiency may not be sufficient. Furthermore, the continuous update of vulnerabilities (CVEs) and scoring (CVSS) requires significant ongoing investment, potentially eating into margins. Lastly, the sales cycle for security solutions, especially those requiring integration with diverse cloud infrastructures, can be long and costly, challenging the ability to achieve rapid growth expected by VC investors.

“Enterprises don't need more tools - they need an autonomous security analyst that never sleeps, never misses a step, and delivers audit-ready reports.”

There is a clear, sizable, and growing market for automated cloud security testing tools. Enterprises and mid-sized companies with cloud-native infrastructures face escalating pressure to comply with security standards (e.g., CIS, NIST, SOC2) while managing sprawling, dynamic environments. Manual security testing is slow, error-prone, and expensive - often requiring teams of specialists. Your AI agent automates the end-to-end workflow: discovery, vulnerability correlation, CVE mapping, CVSS scoring, and report generation - eliminating weeks of manual labor. The output (searchable HTML report) is not just a deliverable but a compliance artifact that auditors and CISOs demand. The 8,000 vulnerabilities across 100 VMs demonstrates scalability and real-world utility. The target audience includes DevSecOps teams, cloud MSPs, and regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government) with budgets for security automation - a market estimated at $20B+ by 2027 (Gartner). Competitors like Prisma Cloud or Aqua Security offer broad platforms but lack the deep, autonomous, agent-driven correlation your solution provides. Your product fills a niche: hyper-automation for repetitive, logic-heavy security tasks. The key differentiator is not just automation, but intelligent, context-aware orchestration that reduces false positives and surfaces high-impact risks. Early adopters would pay $10K - $50K/year for this as a SaaS offering. However, the barrier to VC investment is scalability beyond your prototype: can it integrate with major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) out-of-the-box? Can it handle multi-tenant environments? Can it be sold without engineering support? If you can productize this into a self-service platform with API integrations and usage-based pricing, this becomes a compelling vertical SaaS play with strong gross margins and enterprise sales potential.

“The key to success lies in the scalability and integration capabilities of the AI agent, coupled with a well-structured pricing model.”

The idea addresses a clear pain point in cloud security testing, where manual processes are time-consuming and error-prone. The AI agent automates repetitive tasks, significantly improving efficiency and accuracy. The ability to map vulnerabilities to CVEs and CVSS scores, and compile them into a searchable report, adds substantial value. The market for cloud security is growing rapidly, and solutions that enhance efficiency and accuracy are in high demand. However, the success of this venture will depend on the scalability of the AI agent, the ability to integrate with various cloud platforms, and the pricing model. A subscription-based model with tiered pricing based on the number of VMs or the depth of analysis could be effective. The gross margin should be high given the automated nature of the service, but customer acquisition costs and the need for continuous updates to the AI model must be considered.
