Ask HN: I had Codex and GPT 5.6 Sol running for 12 days, 870k+ LOC. Now what?

Show original source text →
For the last 2 weeks I have been running Codex + GPT 5.6 Sol Ultra non-stop for almost 13 days, working on a huge extension to my SaaS product / business. It used 502,122,866 tokens and created over 870k new LOC. I have done AI coding of huge features in the range of 50-60k LOC before, which were massive already, we managed to ship them and actually deliver value. I know this sounds borderline ridiculous, but this time I don't know what to do. What are the next steps here? It is obviously impossible to review, but it is almost as impossible to actually test. I had put A LOT of work into planning and the workflows and features were spec'ed very precisely and with lots of care and analysis. So far I have only found cosmetic issues, the entire core of the application seems to be working just fine. I have thought about starting with a user manual / knowledge base for it, to capture the features and have plenty of documentation. But then what? Launch it to production? Have I passed the threshold of what is humanly possible to do with AI coding, or is there any hope?

Synthesis verdict
# **Pivot**: The venture's unprecedented use of AI coding to generate 870k LOC in 13 days is overshadowed by the daunting tasks of validation, maintenance, and launch preparation. While the idea demonstrates impressive productivity, its differentiation is fragile due to the commoditization of large-scale code generation tools. The lack of a clear monetization strategy and the challenges in validating and maintaining the AI-generated codebase pose significant risks. The venture's viability hinges on post-AI coding efforts, and the ease of AI coding is outweighed by the monumental task of ensuring quality, understanding the codebase, and maintaining it. The documentation approach is a good start, but it needs to be coupled with a phased rollout and rigorous testing to ensure quality and reliability. To pivot, the venture should focus on developing a unique value proposition that differentiates it from competitors, such as a proprietary process or a focus on a specific industry or use case. Additionally, a clear monetization strategy and a phased rollout plan should be developed to ensure long-term success.

Competition

nvidia/nemotron-3-nano-omni-30b-a3b-reasoning

4.0

The venture's edge rests on meticulous workflow rather than a unique AI capability, making its differentiation fragile in a market where large‑scale code generation tools are rapidly commoditized.

The core of the venture is the ability to generate massive, production‑ready codebases using a combination of Codex and GPT‑5.6 Sol Ultra, backed by meticulous planning and precise specifications. While this demonstrates impressive productivity, the market already offers several AI‑assisted development tools - GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer, Tabnine, Cursor, and Replit Ghostwriter - that provide code suggestions, autocompletion, and even full‑stack generation for large projects. These competitors are rapidly improving and can be integrated into similar workflows, meaning the differentiation hinges more on the entrant's proprietary process than on a unique technology. Because the underlying models and APIs are commoditized and the market is moving toward plug‑and‑play AI coding assistants, any advantage derived solely from the current pipeline is likely to erode as competitors adopt comparable large‑scale generation capabilities and better tooling for quality assurance, testing, and maintainability. Consequently, while the idea shows a remarkable output volume, its defensible differentiation is weak and its durability questionable, leading to a moderate‑low viability score.

Risk

nvidia/llama-3.3-nemotron-super-49b-v1

2.0

Unreviewable, untested 870k LOC AI-generated codebase poses existential technical, regulatory, and market risks.

The venture's viability is severely threatened by insurmountable technical debt, regulatory unknowns, and an untested, unreviewable codebase. The 870k LOC generated by AI in a short span introduces a monumental challenge in maintainability, scalability, and security auditing, which could lead to catastrophic failures or security breaches. Regulatory compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) for such a massive, unreviewed system is uncertain and potentially non-compliant, risking legal repercussions. Furthermore, the 'no-budget customers' risk is high if the target market cannot afford the presumably high costs associated with supporting such a complex system. Churn could skyrocket due to unforeseen bugs or performance issues hidden within the AI-generated code. Platform risk is also elevated as the system's dependency on specific AI versions (Codex, GPT 5.6) may lead to future compatibility issues or cost increases.

Viability

nvidia/llama-3.3-nemotron-super-49b-v1(fallback #1)

8.0

AI coding's ease is overshadowed by the daunting task of validating and maintaining the unprecedented 870k LOC output within a realistic timeframe for a small team.

The project's viability hinges on post-AI coding efforts rather than the coding itself. Generating 870k LOC in 13 days via AI is unprecedented but less concerning than the impending testing, documentation, and launch phases. The ease of AI coding (score: 9/10 for this aspect) is outweighed by the monumental task of ensuring quality, understanding the codebase, and maintaining it. Documentation (user manual/knowledge base) is a sensible next step, addressing the 'unknown unknowns' in the AI-generated code. Launching to production without thorough testing poses significant risks (score: 2/10 for current test readiness). A solo/2-person team can manage the AI coding part in the given timeframe but will struggle with validation and launch prep within 4-12 weeks. **Hard:** Comprehensive testing, code review, maintenance planning. **Easy:** Initial AI coding, documentation setup.

Monetization

mistralai/mistral-nemotron(fallback #1)

7.0

The venture has high potential for innovation but requires a structured monetization plan and rigorous validation to ensure long-term success.

The idea demonstrates a bold and innovative use of AI to scale software development, which could significantly reduce time-to-market and development costs. However, the lack of a clear monetization strategy and the challenges in validating and maintaining such a large AI-generated codebase pose significant risks. The potential for rapid feature delivery is high, but without a well-defined pricing model, customer acquisition strategy, or clear understanding of the cost-to-serve, the business venture may struggle to capture value effectively. The documentation approach is a good start, but it needs to be coupled with a phased rollout and rigorous testing to ensure quality and reliability.
